I'm writing to announce that my film "On The Edge: The Femicide in Ciudad Juarez", will become available, in sections, online over the next several weeks. I'm starting a podcast, so that every Monday, beginning today, one of the 10 different sections of the film will be posted for anyone to watch and download.

The purpose of the film is to inform as many people as possible everywhere about the horrible tragedy happening in Ciudad Juarez, which continues to this day. Making it as easy as practical to see the documentary will continue this mission. Feel free to spread the word and forward this message to anyone you think would be interested in this opportunity to see it for free from the comfort of their own computer monitor.

In other news, I continue to get lots of interest in the film and requests to screen it from all over the world. As I say in response to all of these requests, anyone is free to show the film wherever and as often as they like. I encourage you to contact me with information about screenings you're planning, so that I can post them on the film website. "Bordertown" Release still delayed

Hello everyone,

This is an update on the sitution with the forthcoming film "Bordertown," starring Jennifer Lopez and based on the Juarez femicide situation.

I have been planning a campaign meant to inform moviegoers who come to see Bordertown in the theaters about the real facts of the situation, and many of you are on this list because of interest in that campaign, so that's my reason for this message.

Here's some information about the status of the film:
First, from August of this year:

"I was going to report that Jennifer Lopez's Bordertown, a drama about several unsolved murders of poor women in the El Paso-Juarez areas, would finally see the light of a projector lamp on 10.20.06. Except it's not happening, and nobody you call seems to have a clue when it might be seen.

10.20 is when the IMDB says MGM will be releasing the Gregory Nava-directed drama about a reporter (Lopez) looking into the murders. Not true, according to MGM publicist Jeff Pryor. And pay no mind to the fact that there's an MGM-related Bordertown website either. MGM had negotiations about distributing it but nothing came to fruition, says Pryor, and you can definitely forget about it opening on 10.20. So who's distributing Bordertown? No idea, says Pryor.

Two reps working for Lopez at William Morris said they didn't know either "but why don't you try Warner Bros.?", one said. I did...nothing. I also tried New Line, which looked at possibly distributing Bordertown when they were working in the spring of '05 on the Monster-in-Law opening, but I was told "nope...never happened." A New Line friend told me that Bob Berney's Picturehouse considered distributing Bordertown also, but they also backed off. Five'll get your ten Bordertown will show up sometime in early to mid '07 as a straight-to-video thing. Bets?

Same deal, I'm guessing, for Minnie Driver's Virgin of Juarez, which is about the same subject with Driver playing a reporter digging into the heart of El Paso-Juarez darkness."

premiere in Ciudad Juarez this week; Bordertown release soon

This is an update on what has been happening regarding the film, "On The Edge: The Femicide in Ciudad Juarez." You're receiving this because you signed up to be on this mailing list, probably at a screening of the film. Instructions for unsubscribing are at the end of this message, if you so desire.

It's been a while since I've sent out an update. Briefly, the West Coast tour in July was a big success. The film was shown in 6 cities at 9 screenings, including the Mexican premiere in Tijuana. Approximately 100 copies of the DVD were also distributed during the tour, and I met many many interested and enthusiastic people.
The DVD was officially released on August 8 by Illegal Art. More and more publications are reviewing the film and the word seems to be spreading.

The big news this week is that I'll finally be presenting the film in Juarez itself, at the Border Social Forum. The Forum is a gathering of NGOs and activists from across the US-Mexico borderlands and beyond, modelled on the World Social Forum, but focused narrowly on border issues. I'm excited to be able to show the film there. It will show at the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, Building K, at 11am on Saturday the 14th of October.

In related news, the Hollywood film based on the Juarez situation, "Bordertown," is scheduled for release October 20. The film, starring Jennifer Lopez as a reporter sent to Juarez to investigate the murders, is, by all accounts, a typically banal and distorted depiction of the problem, but it will at least serve, hopefully, to bring to awareness many who are brand new to the issue; the danger is that those viewers will not be made aware that the problem is still happening, and growing, and they will certainly not be alerted to how they can help.

To that end, I will be soon be announcing on this list the availability of a flyer that will be able to be downloaded, printed, and handed out at your local theaters when "Bordertown" is being shown. In this way, with your help, those who have just seen the film will be directed to the real story, the real facts, and toward action they can take.

July West Coast Tour of "On The Edge" Is In Progress

Hello to all of you who have expressed interest at one time or another in the documentary "On The Edge: The Femicide in Ciudad Juarez." This is the first mailing to you from new mailing list software. I'll be sending periodic updates and news about the film and related information, including ongoing plans for an informative action campaign around the theatrical release of "Bordertown," the Jennifer Lopez hollywood movie that fictionalizes the Juarez situation.

This is a brief update to let you know that I am in the middle of a US/Mexico west coast screening tour with the film. Last Saturday I screened the film and spoke in Portland, to an audience of about 60. The discussion and Q&A afterward was wonderful and I was impressed with the knowledgable people present voicing their views and asking excellent questions. I was also thankful that Dan Denvir from Portland Central America Solidarity Committee could be there as a guest speaker on the subject.

I'm now in San Francisco to screen the film twice. Below is the entire rest of the schedule, starting with tonight.
